June 18, 2005 (Cordele, GA)
Known as “The Watermelon Capital of the World”, people flock into Cordele for their annual Watermelon Days Festival, but locals and visitors had more than just a watermelon festival to enjoy this past weekend. With bright sunshine and warm temperatures, adults and children of all ages filed into the Watermelon Capital Speedway Saturday night for the Aaron’s ProChallenge race. Aaron’s storefront balloon was the main attraction as fans entered the track. Greeted by the Aaron’s Sports Marketing team, fans received Aaron hats and diecast cars when they registered-to-win the Aaron’s 55 Chevy.
Not only was Aaron’s well represented around the track but on the track as well. Brett Butler was behind the wheel of the #99 Aaron’s Dream Machine. With 21 cars running in the Aaron’s ProChallenge, Butler grabbed the 16th spot in qualifying. Lining up behind the Ford pace truck, drivers took their positions on the track. After a one by one driver introduction, drivers received the cue to start their engines. The Aaron’s ProChallenge was underway with 21 cars on the track to battle out an intense 50 laps. The first caution came out in lap 3 when the #34 car driven by Crissy Wallace began experiencing trouble in turn four. Having gained two positions, Butler took the 14th spot for the restart. With each driver running strong and aggressive, the second caution came out in lap 16 when Nancy Hardwick in the #16 car spun out in turn four. With the 2nd restart of the night, Butler was running strong. Driving his way through the pack, Butler found himself bumper to bumper with the #13 car driven by Trent Mayo. Battling it out, Butler passed Mayo to take the 11th position. After battling his way through the pack, the unexpected occurred. Going into turn one of lap 42, Butler’s motor locked up, forcing him off the track. With smoke coming from the hood, Butler finished the race in 18th place. Terry Mathis, driving the # 71 car went on to win the race. Although it was an unfortunate ending for the Aaron’s Dream Machine, the team will be working hard to prepare for their upcoming ProChallenge race July 16, 2005 in Newport, TN. Good Luck Brett!
