Butler Takes Away Experience Through Adversity at South Boston

KB III Now Prepares For Next Challenge at Lonesome Pine

South Boston, VA (April 3, 2006) - The challenges of competing in a new division this weekend hit home, as Ken Butler III attempted to qualify for his first race in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Northern Division. Unfortunately, Ken did not get the opportunity to race in the Aaron’s 250.

“It is an uphill battle; it just wasn’t a good day qualifying” said Butler, driver of the #00 Aaron’s Dream Machine. “We were pretty solid and the car got better and better each lap and we thought we were going to do good. Then we went to qualify and the car didn’t turn. There was no grip as soon as we made the initial turn and as soon as I got on the throttle, it would not stick and it just killed the whole lap.”

One of the biggest problems Butler ran into was the fact that South Boston’s local Late Model Division ran for two hours before Pro Cup qualifying, laying down a different kind of rubber on the track. That eventually led to slower times for many of the first qualifiers.

“We missed the race from four-tenths off the pole. I definitely underestimated the Northern Division; it’s very, very close. Everybody is right there; I am still in shock right now that we are missing the race from four-tenths off the pole.”

While not making the race was a disappointment to the team, they did leave South Boston with some added track experience.

“We started practice yesterday and we were way off. We made more and more changes and it seemed to help the car a lot.”

The next race for the Northern Division of the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series is at Lonesome Pine International Raceway, a track that Butler has experience on. He finished third in the Aaron’s Pro Challenge Series National Race that was run there last year.

In preparation for the next race the #00 Aaron’s Dream Machine team is going to take what they learned from South Boston in addition to getting more time on tracks.

“We are going to test on Tuesday. We are going to test qualifying just to get me better at running laps; I will probably spend the whole day just doing qualifying laps.

“I definitely need to improve on myself; last year I never qualified great and qualifying is everything on these short tracks.”

As the team left South Boston Speedway behind, Butler was optimistic and looked forward to his next attempt at Lonesome Pine International Raceway.

“I’ve just got to put it behind me, clear my head and get better.”
